To celebrate the launch of Mike Rose’s final book, When the Light Goes On: The Life-Changing Wonder of Learning in an Age of Metrics, Screens, and Diminished Human Connection, the Mike Rose Living Archive is launching a national campaign.
This movement centers the wonder of teaching and learning through the voices of individuals from all ages, backgrounds, and educational paths. It amplifies the wonder of that “vibrant human core of education” by inviting readers and listeners to share a transformative moment when learning connected with them and education became meaningful—leading to life changing possibilities.
To honor Mike Rose's legacy we will be highlighting and sharing stories from across our nation—stories that illustrate how "the light went on." If you have a story to share, or know an educator who goes out of their way to make education a point of human connection that ignites learning, please share using the link.
Let's infuse the narratives about education with those transformative moments. In Mike's words, this enables us "to reclaim education as a vital and vitalizing human activity," one where "a person is not regulated and regimented in school, but finds it meaningful and is drawn to it."
Join us on this mission to reclaim the joy and imagination in education.
Reflecting his lifelong commitment to educating students too often overlooked or underserved by our education system, the proceeds of When the Light Goes On benefit an endowed scholarship fund supporting the students of Los Angeles Trade-Tech College.
This fund was established prior to Mike’s passing and is managed by the Foundation for the Los Angeles Community Colleges.
